The story of Ruby Bridges's courage is a beacon of hope, and it shines brightly in the 2nd grade Wit and Wisdom curriculum. Every year, Fairmount students are deeply inspired by Ms. Bridges’s bravery and hope. As our 2nd grade students wrapped up their Civil Rights unit this month, we had the incredible honor of welcoming special guests from our community who shared their personal stories of living through the challenges of school integration in Bristol.
Mr. Lawrence Bell, a member of the last graduating class of Slater High School, told our 2nd and 3rd graders about his experiences growing up during segregation. Mrs. Teresa Brown, a retired BTCS teacher, brought the story of Ruby Bridges to life with a historical interpretation, before sharing her own experience as a young student in Bristol when schools integrated. Fairmount's students and teachers were captivated by their presentation and the stories of resilience they shared. Mr. Bell and Mrs. Brown inspired students to seize the opportunities they have today and remember the individuals who paved the way for them.
Fairmount is deeply grateful to Mr. Bell and Mrs. Brown for generously sharing their wisdom and experiences with our students and teachers.
