What do Burger King and Fairmount have in common? You can “have it your way”!
Coming off of our very successful 2023-2024 year of reading, Mrs. Rutherford kicked off this new school year with a new theme for our Reading Challenges. Just like Burger King allows diners to “have it your way”, here at Fairmount we want our students to Read It Your Way. This means our main goal is for students to read the books that they enjoy reading. This looks different for everyone, and that is great! Love graphic novels? Read those! Enjoy sports? Check out some sports biographies. Whether it’s picture books, chapter books, or something else, we want students to read books they love.
To keep with our burger theme, we held a school-wide assembly to learn about this year’s challenges. Two teams made up of teachers and students raced to “cook” giant burgers with oversized toppings. To keep things interesting, the adults on the team represented the burger patty and buns and had to pile up to “be the burger.” We celebrated with our own Fairmount version of the Burger King “Have It You Way” jingle.
The reading challenges run throughout the school year. Students work to complete self-selected reading challenges to earn charms for necklaces or bookbag tags. There are a variety of challenges to choose from based upon what students enjoy reading. Examples include Graphic Novel Guru, Picture Perfect Picture Book Challenge, Sports Star, Chapter Book Champ, Book BFF, and Totally True. Students can even create their own challenge to match their interests. For students who want to go above and beyond, we also have year-long, mega challenges. These challenge students to read a certain number of books from different genres or to track the number of words they read throughout the year.
Currently these are the standings for Top Words Read:
